Safer consenting in the Covid-19 world and beyond

The role of digital tools and how they can be used to help inform and educate patients about their medical condition and treatment options, saving valuable time.

12 June 2020

This webinar took place on Thursday 11 June 2020 and is now available on-demand.

Following the suspension of all non-urgent elective surgery to help free up general and acute care capacity in the wake of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, steps are now being taken to resume routine elective procedures, where possible.

This webinar recording explores the role of digital and online tools in the context of consent and, in particular, how such resources can be used to help inform and educate patients about their medical condition and treatment options remotely and prior to a face to face consultation and/or procedure, saving valuable clinical time.

This webinar explores the following issues:

  • The wider context and financial cost of consent claims against the NHS
  • A brief overview of the law in this area (including mental capacity considerations) and what this means, in practical terms for clinicians
  • How digital and online resources can be used appropriately and effectively to enable patients to understand their condition and the treatment options such that they can make an informed decision about what treatment they wish to receive

The webinar was chaired by Damian Whitlam, Partner at 澳门六合彩资料 with contributions from Tim Shurlock, Safety and Learning Lead at NHS Resolution, Ed Pollard, Senior Associate at 澳门六合彩资料 and Amelia Newbold, Risk Management Lead at 澳门六合彩资料. The panel will also be joined by Mr Simon Parsons, Divisional Director of Surgery, Upper GI Consultant Surgeon at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and Clinical Director at EIDO Healthcare, as well as Matthew Ravenscroft at EIDO Healthcare.

During the webinar we received a huge number of questions regarding processes and best practice, which we reviewed to create a FAQ factsheet to help you manage the consent process during this challenging time.
